Meet the Goat Who Wouldn’t Go Away (and the 94-Year-Old Illustrator Who Helped Bring Him to Life)

Hi there,

We’re Steven Magreven and Angel Rose—an unlikely author-illustrator duo brought together by a goat, a grandson, and a really good story.

The Go Away Goat! series started with a real (and really stubborn) goat that showed up at Steven’s Kansas home and refused to leave. Over two days, he tried everything to outwit the horned intruder—while his family watched and laughed from a safe distance. The story became family legend, and Steven, a lifelongstoryteller, wrote it down as a gift for his young grandson.

That could’ve been the end… but then Angel Rose got involved.

She loved the story so much, she started drawing the goat and all his mischievous antics . Then she had it printed - just for fun.

Angel’s journey is as compelling as the goat’s. She started life with a heartbreak that shaped everything. She was just six when her mother died during the Great Depression. Along with her four siblings, she was sent cross-country on a train to live with an aunt. They weren’t allowed to bring much—not even her beloved doll. That moment stayed with her.

And yet, she grew up to meet life with open arms. She and her high school sweetheart have been married 71 years, raised 6 kids, who had 28 grandkids, who have had 47 (and counting) great grandkids. She earned her nursing degree in her 50’s, and spent years caring for newborns in NICU and pediatric units. Later, she opened a toy store filled with educational toys and, especially, dolls—perhaps to give other children the joy she was once denied.

Now, at age 94, Angel has inspired the publishing of not just one, but a planned 26-book series: The Go Away Goat! Series. One for every letter of the alphabet.

These books are sweet, simple, and full of playful chaos—designed for toddlers and early readers to fall in love with reading alongside someone they love. No moral lectures. No hidden agenda. Just great stories with heart.

Thanks for helping us bring these stories (and that stubborn goat) to more families.

Warmly,

Steven Magreven & Angel Rose
